we. are. finally. out .of. the. old. house.

hello world. it is me: girl filled with exhaustion. exhaustion with a small dose of hopefulness. a dash. a pinch. an essence. essense of hopefulness.

but mostly i am a big simmering pot of exhaustion stew.

so exhausted that my brain is filled with both malls, my lips are cracked because i can never remember to drink water, my hair is drier than normal and i have small cuts on all appendages (shakes cut fist in the direction of evil cut-inducing packing boxes).

anyway: brain, retired. eyes, heavy. body = often sighing. i sigh as if i am atlas himself with his big ball of world weighing heavy on his shoulders. and with that, i think i will put myself to bed and hold a magazine up to my face and pretend that my eyes and brain can coordinate enough to read words.

what? what is it they are trying to tell me?

I wonder how those Old Skool die hards are doing today? Flickr's making everyone use a Yahoo! sign in. I sucked it up last month and... it wasn't that bad. But I haven't figured out how to create a third account (I need a third account!).

the pitfalls and pratfalls of moving

cherries blossom
Originally uploaded by emdot.
My move is neverending.

Reason one: banker's boxes. Aw, well, you know. I have weakness for the small-sized banker's box. The one that is constructed to hold files and papers and stack and last. The one that is one-third the size of a normal moving box. All of the boxes we had were banker size. We had maybe two boxes that were normal, moving-size.

This would explain the 100 trips up and down the stairs for each of us.

This would explain why there are still boxes left to bring over.

This would explain the sysiphus-ness of it all.

Note to fast-readers/skimmers: I did NOT say syphyllis. Did not.

Reason two: I'm not a spring chicken any longer. Summer chickens take longer to recuperate. Moving boxes up and down stairs becomes monumentally harder. See comment above about sysiphus-not-syphillis.

Reason three: Lazy. Ass.

Reason four: Ex.haust.ed. It's not even funny anymore how tired I am ALL THE TIME. I've started to wonder if it isn't just a case of mind over matter, but that matter is so. damn. heavy.

Reason four: banker's boxes. Again. For prosperity.

Reason five: Did not spring for hired movers.

Note to self: next time: hire movers.

Second note to self: get rid of half of everything said self owns.

Compassion is the best protection

Originally uploaded by emdot.

Compassion is the best protection; it is also, as the great masters of the past have always known, the source of all healing. Suppose you have a disease such as cancer or AIDS. By taking on the sickness of those suffering like you, in addition to your own pain, with a mind full of compassion, you will—beyond any doubt—purify the past negative karma that is the cause, now and in the future, of the continuation of your suffering.

In Tibet there have been many extraordinary cases of people who, when they heard they were dying of a terminal illness, gave away everything they had and went to the cemetery to die. There they practiced taking on the suffering of others; and what is amazing is that instead of dying, they returned home, fully healed.

Things I've recently liked

  • the trucks: nursery punk (from fresh air)
I didn't know there was a name for this type of music, but I've loved it for most of my life.

  • Grandmaster Flash (from fresh air)
Really interesting interview... I love how T.G. knows just the questions to ask. Especially when she asks GMF to talk over one of his mixes to explain what he is doing. So great.

  • Martha Raddatz on the attack at Sadr City (from fresh air)
It's a heartbreak interview. The tone in her voice really belies how terrible the situation is... something you don't hear from most reporters. Plus, this woman really knows her stuff.

  • Country of Men novelist interviewed (from fresh air)
Again with the heartbreak. Tho... truly... life is a heartbreak. The bittersweetness of it all. A bit of this is captured in this interview

i love my favorites

And then there are my recent favorites on Flickr. I don't have time to link to each photo or photographer, but you can see them all here.

I'm sorry Maryland, Wisonsin and Wyoming!

Well shoot. I thought I'd gotten 48 of our 50 states. But it turns out I put Connecticut down twice (stupid Connecticut).

Still, another quiz for you: name the 50 states in 10 minutes.

For Hoo, because he asked:

Your Social Dysfunction: Happy

You're a happy person - you have a good amount of self-esteem, and are socially healthy. While this isn't a social dysfunction per se, you're definitely not normal. Consider yourself lucky: you walk that fine line between 'normal' and being outright narcissistic. You're rare - which is something else to be happy about.

Take this quiz at QuizGalaxy.com

How many countries can you name in 10 minutes?

I got 77 countries in 10 minutes. To be honest, I thought I would have done better than that. But one of my problems was that I didn't go continent by continent (which I recommend that you do), so I started forgetting which countries I had named and which I hadn't. Also... spelling counts on this one and that bit me a couple of times (Azerbaijan anybody?).
