a keyhole garden

a keyhole garden, originally uploaded by a.sheu.

Today, a friend sent a link about Keyhole Gardens, a type of raised-bed garden that protects soil and creates a bigger crop for difficult growing areas. I think this is one of the greatest ideas ever.

They are teaching this type of gardening to the people in Lesotho, but I think it would be a great type of garden to have here in California: easy to maintain, easy to plant, easy to harvest.

I found the above photo on Flickr. You can also see this harvest-ready garden also on Flickr. Or visit the Save a Cow web site. It has more photos and instructions. Or see the AfriGadget web site for more photos and information.

Hey there, saw you on Flickr today. :)

We must have had the same idea, as I was looking for images of keyhole gardens when I saw your comment on this particular image. That led me to your blog, which I hadn't seen for a while. Good reminder.

I want a keyhole garden!

Muchos saludos, Jeanne

I love that we both turned to Flickr to find photos. A little disappointed that there weren't more there.

I'm building one of these in my front yard - the walls are built and I'm filling it with dirt and compost. I love the walls in the one you posted. I wanted to use materials I had, planned on using some old firewood logs, but decided to use bricks instead. I had about 1/2 of them already, had to buy about $100 in stone. I'll keep posting pictures as I finish it and as the garden grows! http://mynjgarden.com
