EARTHQUAKE!, part VI
julia morgan super star

julia morgan & hearst castle

we all need a solemn moment to bow down at the feet of julia morgan, architect of hearst castle in san simeon.

as one of the only working female architects of her time (turn of 20th century), morgan was a favorite architect of the hearst family. mrs. hearst had her design and build a few structures at uc berkeley. so, when william randolf hearst began to build at san simeon, he chose morgan.

only several miles from today's 6.5 magnitude earthquake, there is no structural damage at the castle. buildings 20 miles away have crumbled like sand castles. the castle will re-open tomorrow (this is amazing).

morgan did all kinds of innovative things for the castle, like suspending the outside pool instead of having it sit in the ground. i have actually stood crouched underneath it.

i hope the news channels get smart and do a great in depth study on her!
